has about 700 inhabitants living on an area of 550 km2. The municipality centre is situated at Dun on the island Jøa, with about 500 inhabitants. On the municipality's mainland, Salsnes is the center. The municipality lies about 35 km from Namsos, the nearest town and trade centre. The economic life is characterized mostly by farming, but fish rearing is also an important business. The writer Olav Duun was born and raised at Jøa, and this is clearly shown in his authorship, both in landscape and temper. Both Salsnes and Jøa have many interesting artefacts, and rock carvings at Salsnes are estimated closely to 5.500 years of age. At Salsnes one also find the inland ocean Salsvatnet, which with its depth of 464 metres is considered the second deepest in northern Europe. |
